From a young age, Deanna Short’s passion for math and science was evident, driving her to seek a career that could positively impact others’ lives. Although she initially pursued nursing, she soon realized her true calling lay in the world of technology. Embracing the challenges and opportunities of a career shift, Deanna found her place in software development. Her journey, marked by resilience and determination, eventually led her to Elevator3, where she continues to inspire and pave the way for future women in tech.

Background and Inspiration

From a young age, I have had a love for math and science. I have always known my dream career would use this love to improve the lives of others. While my first career as a Registered Nurse wasn’t my right fit, it did strengthen my core career desires. As a young girl, I was not taught the role of a person in Computer Science, but was instead encouraged to pursue a law or medical career. Previously, my perception of a career in Computer Science was IT centric and I had never considered developing software as an option. It wasn’t until after I graduated with my nursing degree that I found software development. I was thrilled to discover that a career in software development offers the opportunity to provide valuable services, advance professionally, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. In 2022, I decided to continue my education and obtain a Computer Science Degree at Southeastern Louisiana University. Subsequently, I obtained an internship at Elevator3, then progressed to a full-time software developer position upon graduation in May of 2024.

Experience as a Woman in Software Development

In a field known to be male-dominated, being a female developer can feel intimidating. It can be challenging to picture yourself in a role where you see few others like you. As women, we may face many challenges regarding biases, stereotypes, unequal opportunities and pay disparity. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women software developers earn a median salary that is 88% of what their male counterparts make, https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat39.htm. Also, due to the lack of role models and representation, imposter syndrome can be more severe for women. I am grateful to working with a team that cultures an environment where I feel accepted, valued, and heard. As the first female developer at Elevator3, I am paving the way for future women developers in this company. I aim to be a good role model and mentor by being an advocate and a facilitator of professional development and success for other women in tech. This is essential for young women who may be on the fence about entering this field. I look forward to working on my professional growth in computer science that so I can motivate other women to overcome challenges and achieve their goals in this industry.

Advice for Women in Tech

To anyone, especially women, interested in computer science, I would encourage staying up to date on tech news and attending industry conferences and tech events, such as SQL Saturday, one of my personal favorites. Networking and keeping current with tech advancements is very important in building connections and making advancements in your career. For example, in April I was provided a wonderful opportunity to attend the Women in Tech Conference. It was fulfilling to be involved in conversions surrounding inclusivity, leadership, and growth while making connections. An important takeaway from this conference that merits being passed on is to take up space and let your voice be heard. Always continue to learn, improve your skills, and cultivate relationships. Understand that every day is a learning experience. Each day I aim to nurture an environment where everyone feels welcome and their growth is supported by encouraging communication, providing mentorship, and promoting collaboration. Being present and continuing to learn and grow is the key to success in this field.
